Jesus Now and Then

Authors: Richard A Burridge, Graham Gould

Published: 2004

Jesus was brought up in a dusty backwater of a Roman province. He did not travel more than 200 miles from his birthplace. He did not marry or write a book, and he had only a handful of followers. He died young, executed as a criminal. Yet, today, a third of the world’s population worships him as God, and another quarter calls him prophet.

Who did Jesus think he was?
Did the early Church take a man and make him into God?
Was Christianity invented by St Paul?

Richard A. Burridge and Graham Gould explore how traditional beliefs about Jesus have been viewed since the Enlightenment, and how they are understood today. They examine which contemporary views are compatible with the Bible and with Christian traditions. Marginal notes, summaries and boxes of basic facts make this book accessible to those studying theology or training for the ministry and the general reader wanting to discover more about the enduring impact of Jesus of Nazareth.

Revd. Dr. Richard Burridge is Dean of Kings College, London and author of Four Gospels, One Jesus (SPCK) and What Are the Gospels? (Cambridge University Press). Dr Graham Gould was a lecturer at King’s College from 1990 to 2003, where he taught patristics and liturgical studies. He is the author of The Desert Fathers on Monastic Community ( Oxford University Press) and co-editor of the Journal of Theological Studies.
